My name is Rita Hayworth Thomas. Nine years ago things looked
pretty bleak for me. Some very, very bad people had hurt me terribly
and then left me at a dumpster to die. I was just a pup and needed a
miracle to save me. When a kind looking man stopped to buy fuel at a
nearby gas station, I took a chance and asked him if he needed me at his
house. In a moment, my life changed from just terrible to just
wonderful. My new mom felt so bad for me because I was not a very
pretty sight to see. All my hair had fallen out except for a small
tuft of red hair on my head. My skin was just stretched over my bones
because I had not eaten much for so very long. She decided that I
needed a beautiful name to grow into and that red hair reminded her of a
famous movie star. I think I have done a good job of living up to my
namesake, don't you?
After
a few days in the hospital, I finally got to my new home. Imagine my
surprise when I found out that I had a sister! Ayla was rescued just a
few months before me. She taught me everything I know and was just the
best sister anyone could ever have. We played for hours and hours
every day in our fine fenced yard. She taught me how to tree squirrels
and we were a great team. In the evenings we would have supper and
lots of love from our family. Then we would snuggle down in our beds
in the sunroom and sleep like little angels, dreaming about running in
fields of flowers, chasing squirrels and rabbits. We were happy girls.
Then a terrible thing happened to Ayla called cancer and a few months ago
she went to heaven. I have been a very sad girl ever since. My
family has done everything they can think of to help me feel better and my
friends at Monroe Vet have been so good to me. They loved Ayla, too,
and know how I feel.
Maybe you would be surprised to find out that dogs
grieve for their dog
friends and family. I still do not like to be alone and won't go out
by myself. For a while I could not eat and I cried in my sleep.
My mom and dad have talked about another friend for me but I am not ready.
I have some stuffed animals to sleep with, two bears and a lamb, and I am
not so lonely at bedtime now. A few times lately I have danced for my
dinner and today I rolled over on my back and asked for a belly rub. I
think I still have some happy times to come in my life and my mom and my dad
and my friends at Monroe Vet are helping me find them : )
