Penguins in Sweaters?

Even though penguins live in cold
climates, they don't normally wear sweaters! Blue penguins in New
Zealand were contaminated with oil after an oil tanker went aground and oil
spilled out into the ocean. Since penguins clean themselves by
preening their feathers, they were ingesting oil which could make them ill
or even cause their death. Researchers realized that sweaters could
keep them warm and keep them from ingesting the oil on their "feathers".
Knitters world-wide have been making sweaters for the penguins.

Arabian Oryx
Have you ever heard of an Arabian Oryx?
This creature is native to the Middle East and had been hunted almost to
extinction, mainly because of it's horns. People thought they
resembled unicorns and wanted to harvest the horns. The oryx was
thought to be extinct in the wild in 1972.
The Phoenix Zoo in Arizona has a hot, dry climate that is similar
to the native climate of the Arabian Oryx and they have had a very
successful program with the Oryx.
Because of the efforts to save the Oryx,
it is the first species of "extinct in the wild " to be upgraded the
"vulnerable" category. Because of the strong conservation programs and
work in zoos such as the Phoenix Zoo, the animals of this species been have
re-introduced in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Israel and the United Arab Emirates,
where they have fared well. You can read more about the conservation
efforts at this
link.

Have you
been keeping up with "Happy Feet" the lost penguin?
"Happy Feet is the penguin who was found in New Zealand
after he had been eating sand, thinking that it was snow. He has now
recovered from the "sand" surgery and has been released in the
ocean to head back to his home. He is wearing a tracking device and you can
follow his progress by

World Rabies Day
September 28, 2011
World
Rabies Day events have educated 150 million people and vaccinated
4.6 million animals worldwide!
The mission of World Rabies
Day is to raise awareness about the impact of human and animal
rabies, how easy it is to prevent it, and how to eliminate the main
global sources. Even though the major impact of rabies occurs in
regions of the world where many needs are present, rabies should no
longer be neglected. The tools and technology for human rabies
prevention and dog rabies elimination are available.
Rabies in humans is 100%
preventable through prompt appropriate medical care. Yet, more than
55,000 people, mostly in Africa and Asia, die from rabies every year
- a rate of one person every ten minutes. Find out more at
http://www.worldrabiesday.org/

Playing with Your dog in Hot Weather
By:
Grace Coley (Junior 4-H'er in the Dog Care project)
It is
fun to play outside with your dog in the summer, but hot weather can have a
bad effect on your dog. Dogs can’t sweat like humans. They pant instead.
When dogs get hot and tired, they breathe very hard and their tongues hang
out.
It is
very important to keep your dogs out of the sun for long periods of time. If
your dog is an outside dog, make sure they have plenty of shade and fresh
water. If a dog gets too hot, they could have a heatstroke. When you and
your dog play together, watch for signs that he needs a break. If he is
panting a lot and getting tired, make sure you let him rest, because he
doesn’t know when he needs to stop. If you and your dog exercise, you should
do it in the mornings or evenings because there isn’t as much sun beating
down on you both. You should always have water out for your dog in case he
needs a break. After a long hot walk, dogs love to get wet because it cools
their body . Playing with your dog in a kiddie pool or squirting them with
a hose are both easy to do and can be fun for you and your dog.
Just remember to keep your dog out of the sun for long periods of time
during the summer. Keep water with you so you and the dog stay hydrated. And
always think of this question when you are with your dog in the heat of the
summer: I’m hot and sweaty, I wonder if my dog needs a break too?
